How to become an expert wine taster

Although we have experts who deal in wine tasting, you too can learn a few tricks by going around and sampling a wide range of wines. This process helps the palette become tune to different flavors. Here we look at how to taste wine eloquently and that starts with the way you hold the glass.

  • Wine Glasses

    Holding a wine glass

To get started you need to learn to hold the glass in a stylish manner. If the wine served is chilled, hold the glass by the stem to avoid touching the bowl, if the wine given to you is at room temperature, then you can take the glass by the bowl and cup it in your palm and also keep the stem in between the two middle fingers of your hand.

To obtain the aromas of the wine you will need to tilt your glass a bit. Hold the glass at an arm’s length distance from your eyes, here you can observing the color and opacity of the wine, the first step in the wine tasting process. You are looking to identify the type of grapes used for making the wine depending upon the color of the wine being observed. The clearer the wine will be, the younger it is. If you notice the wine is very cloudy, there is likely to be something wrong with the wine, it may even be off.

Aroma can influence the taste of the wine

Swirl the wine in the bowl with a bit of wrist movement. You then need to bring the tip of the glass close to your nose in an elegant manner - this will allow you to smell and appreciate the aroma of the wine. Remember to take a break before exhaling to ensure you have smelt the aromas, before you start inhaling again. You can now express yourself by saying something about the wine. The final part of wine tasting is the actual tasting of the wine – open your mouth slightly and take a small sip. You can then close your mouth and allow the wine to linger all around your tongue before you allow it to slowly move down your throat – you also need to exhale at the same time.

If you enjoyed the aroma & taste of the wine so far, you can always take a second sip. But avoid taking more that that. You can eat a piece of cheese or even have sherbet before you start wine tasting of another wine label again. This helps you to clear the taste of the previous wine.

A true wine tasting expert will always have his or her wine tasting notes written down in a professional manner. Such wine tasting notes will always specify various details about the wine like texture, aroma, taste, etc.
