Australian Wine Regions

Australian’s are blessed with many great wine regions with wine being produced in nearly every state of Australia. If you are a tourist looking to sample some quality Australian wines then the regions below are hard to pass up.

    South Australian Wine Region


    Looking at the percentage of wine produced, South Australian is the most important part of Australia wine region. It produces more than half of Australia’s total wine some believe it produces some of the best quality wine in the world. The Barossa Valley approximately 1 hour from Adelaide, is well known for producing Shiraz, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Riesling. Many of Australia’s largest wineries are located in Barossa Valley. The Clare Valley is especially known for making Riesling wine of the finest quality, other wines produced in this region include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills also contribute significantly to the wine production in South Australian wine region.


    New South Wales Wine Region

    New South Wales was the first state in Australian to start producing wines, it currently produces over 30 percent of Australia’s wine. Mudgee approximately 3 hours from Sydney is famous for red wines such as easy drinking Merlot, peppery Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Hunter Valley west of that is a historic grape-producing area and is best known for its Semillon. Finally Orange produces white wines that are quite unique in flavor along with a range of red wines that are of very good quality.


    Victorian Wine Region

    Victorians wine region contributes about 15 percent to Australia’s wine production. The wineries that are found here are generally smaller in size when compared to other wineries found in Australia. The Murray River is important as it produces grapes for wines that have earned a good name for themselves. Rutherglen has mastered the art of making unusual wines like dessert Muscats and Tokays. The Goulburn Valley produces a good Shiraz. The Yarra Valley produces a great range of wines like some lively Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.Try to choose glasses that are clear and pure in their looks. This will help you in appreciating the true color of the wine being consumed, generally speaking most people avoid buying coloured glasses for this reason. The shape of wine glasses is also an important factor in enjoying your wine.


    Western Australian Wine Region

    Although Western Australian wine region produces very little wine if we compare it with other regions, it produces wine that is of excellent quality. The Swan Valley in the south of WA is a historic center for wine production but Margaret River and Great Southern have become very popular wine regions producing a range of great wine from full bodied reds to smooth whites.


    Although not an extensive list of Australian wine regions, each of the regions above have contributed in their own special way to help Australia to become one of the key wine producing countries in the world.
